What is Processor, Working, structure and Tech Explained !

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

In Mobile market like India which is specs driven, usually mobiles are compared on the basis of camera, battery, and Processor. As the most important component of Device is Processor which not only controls the device but decides how long the device will stay healthy, time taken to perform certain task, image processing capabilities, heating management, power consumption not just this but many more. There are many rumors regarding the same as of cores, frequency, and GPU lets clear the basics first then we move on to comparison between the top Guns in the business.

  • Lets simply understand basic structure of a Processor. The main architecture on which the processor is to be made is Provided by company ARM to companies like Qualcomm, Mediatek, Exyno. The architecture has been improving with time. Initially it started with Cortex A5 and has reached to cortex A77.

  • A processor consists of huge number(milliions) of small size transistors. More smaller the size of Transistor More Powerful and Efficient will be the processor. This is called fabrication and denoted as size like 8nm, 7nm. Till now 7nm is most powerful and efficient technology developed on mass scale but work on 5nm is in progress and will be available by mid of 2020.

  • And now comes number of the core which can be denoted as hands of the processor or how many tasks a processor can perform at one time. It could be Dual. Quad, octa or deca cores. If CPU is octa core then it will have 8 small processors to performs different tasks at same time. It looks like more the cores better will be the processor but that is not the case always. it also depends on their architecture.

  • Another is the Frequency of CPU. It is usually in GHz ( 1 gigahertz = 1000000000 hertz). It means how many times a CPU can work in 1 second. for Example 1 GHz processor can do 1000000000 work in 1 second. It depends upon the work.

The most important is GPU i.e. Graphic Processing Unit which majorly deals with the graphics of the system or UX. Most of us get confused between CPU and GPU but its simple. We know CPU is brain of the computer and could perform graphics operation also, so why do we need separate GPU ? It can be said that CPU is Jack of all trades not the Master but GPU performs only one task and it is MASTER of that. GPU takes advantage of having thousands of core (though less powerful) because of which it can perform parallel computing and can render graphics at much more faster rate to show up at screen. It could predict and process graphic before hand. GPU is mostly used in graphics intensive processes like video editing and rendering, gaming and 3D designing. Powerful the GPU better and smoother will be the user experience in graphic rendering. Major GPU Manufactures are Nvidia, Qualcomm Adrino, Arm mali.
